Community information
The community plays a vital role in helping to keep our rivers healthy and protected within the Bristol Avon catchment. Over recent years the BACP has become aware of an increased interest from communities in their local waterways, with many local groups wanting to take part in work and volunteering their time to deliver work that will help protect and enhance their local rivers. The BACP is keen to support and empower communities in protecting the water environment across the catchment.
In 2022 the BACP established a Community Grants Programme as part of the Catchment Partnership Fund. This can provide small grants to community groups to fund their work and covers things such as water quality testing kits or equipment to help with habitat management.
Additionally in 2023, the BACP hosted a Workshop focused on “Supporting Community Action for Rivers”. This workshop helped us identify how community groups function, what is best practice, what support is already offered and what are the challenges; and where community work is taking place.
